STC Dn - 2022 Annual Report

The Scientific Technical Committee on Design (STC Dn) held two meetings in 2022, including a virtual meeting during the CIRP Winter Meeting and a hybrid meeting during the CIRP General Assembly. The Winter Meeting on February 18th and the GA Meeting on August 25th were attended by 68 and 76 participants, respectively. Moreover, the STC Dn members actively contributed to various meetings of the Collaborative Working Groups, Corporate Members Advisory Group, Cross-STC Group, and other CIRP initiatives.

STC Dn Conferences

At the two meetings, a series of conferences under STC Dn were reported and discussed.

  • 2022 - 32nd CIRP Design Conference (Gif-Sur-Yvette, France)
  • 2022 - 17th CIRP CAT Conference (Metz, France)
  • 2023 - 33rd CIRP Design Conference (Sydney, Australia)
  • 2024 - 34th CIRP Design Conference (Bath, UK)
  • 2024 - 18th CIRP CAT Conference (Huddersfield, UK)
  • 2025 - 35th CIRP Design Conference (Athens, Greece)

STC Dn Keynotes

At the two meetings, a series of STC Dn keynotes were proposed, reported, and discussed.

  • 2022 - “Designing value-driven solutions: the evolution of industrial product-service systems” by D. Brissaud, T. Sakao, A. Riel, & J.A. Erkoyuncu.
  • 2023 - “Bioinspired design of advanced products” by A.P. Malshe, K.P. Rajurkar, S. Bapat, A. Liu, & J.M. Linarès.
  • 2024 - “Scientific foundation of data science for engineering design” by A. Liu, S.C.Y. Lu, F. Tao & N. Anwer.
  • 2025 - “Digital twins for engineering design” by N. Anwer, R. Stark, F. Tao, & J.A. Erkoyuncu.

STC Dn Publications

  • At the 71st CIRP General Assembly, a total of six (6) Dn papers were presented and discussed, which were fewer by four (4) papers than the previous year.
  • The keynote presentation was delivered by D. Brissaud. The STC Dn members thanked the lead author and the co-authors for their excellent work.

Technical Presentations

At the two meetings, a total of 8 technical presentations were delivered and discussed, covering a wide spectrum of design-related topics.

  • “Human-centric advanced collaborative design platforms through the integration of Extended Reality (XR) to CAx technologies” by D. Mourtzis.
  • “Designing the use of blockchains to record a complex assets health condition” by J. A. Erkoyuncu.
  • “A concept of product-production-codesign” by G. Lanza.
  • “A digital twin for geometry assurance – challenges for an industrial implementation” by K. Wärmefjord.
  • “Designing flexible production lines with the use of VR and AI powered digital twins” by G. Michalos, S. Makris, & A. Papavasileiou.
  • “KLM for heritage: towards a humanization of the industry through heritage knowledge or how to consider heritage as a pillar of knowledge to build a sustainable future” by F. Laroche.
  • “3D printing path planning for continuous carbon fiber reinforced bionic composite structures” by N. Li, G. Link, & J. Jelonnek.
  • “Topology characterisation of the kinematic chain of the ant exoskeleton: opportunities for bioinspired design” by S.A. Tobon.

Collaborative Working Groups

The STC Dn ambassadors to the following CWGs provided reports and updates.

  • Biologicalisation in Manufacturing
  • Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing
  • Production Technologies and Systems for E-Mobility
  • Manufacturing Technology for Semiconductor Manufacturing

STC Dn Strategic Positioning

  • The strategic positioning of STC Dn was discussed on a continuous basis.
  • The number of STC Dn papers published in CIRP Annals Volume 2 was discussed. As the acceptance rate remained largely unchanged, the consensus was that the priority would be to increase the number of paper submissions to STC Dn in the future.
  • Represented by D. Mourtzis, the STC Dn members contributed one proposal to the CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering.

Other Business

  • The election of new STC Dn officers was conducted according to the CIRP internal regulation. At the GA meeting, the STC Dn members and officers expressed their greatest gratitude to Prof. Stark for his great leadership and service in the past.
  • The STC Dn officers met virtually, on a regular basis, throughout the year.
  • The STC Dn officers were actively engaged in discussions with the STC A and STC O officers regarding how to reinforce collaborations on emerging research topics.
