STC Dn - 2023 Annual Report

The Scientific Technical Committee on Design (STC Dn) held two meetings in 2023, including one in-person meeting during the CIRP Winter Meeting in Paris and another in-person meeting during the CIRP General Assembly in Dublin. The Winter Meeting on February 24th and the GA Meeting on August 24th were attended by 60 and 65 participants, respectively. Moreover, the STC Dn members actively contributed to various meetings of the Collaborative Working Groups (CWG), Corporate Members Advisory Group (CMAG), Cross-STC Group, and other CIRP initiatives (CNTPE).

STC Dn Conferences

During the two meetings, a series of conferences under STC Dn were reported and discussed.

  • 2023 – The 33rd CIRP Design Conference (Sydney, Australia)
  • 2024 – The 34th CIRP Design Conference (Cranfield, UK)
  • 2025 – The 35th CIRP Design Conference (Patras, Greece)
  • 2024 – The 18th CIRP CAT Conference (Huddersfield, UK)

STC Dn Keynotes

During the two meetings, a series of STC Dn keynotes were proposed, reported, and discussed.

  • 2023 - “Exploring the intersection of biology and design for product innovations” by A.P. Malshe, K.P. Rajurkar, S. Bapat, A. Liu, J.M. Linarès.
  • 2024 - “Data science for product design: convergence towards data-driven design” by A. Liu, S.C.Y. Lu, F. Tao, N. Anwer.
  • 2025 - “Developing and leveraging digital twins in engineering design” by N. Anwer, R. Stark, F. Tao, J.A. Erkoyuncu.
  • 2026 - “Industrial Metaverse for future factory design and operations” by D. Mourtzis, L. Wang, G. Lanza, N. Anwer.

STC Dn Publications

  • During the 72nd CIRP General Assembly, a total of eight (8) Dn papers were presented and discussed, which were more by two (2) papers than the previous year.
  • The 2023 keynote presentation was delivered by A.P. Malshe. The STC Dn members thanked the lead author and the co-authors for their excellent work.

Technical Presentations

During the two meetings, a total of eight (8) technical presentations were delivered and discussed, covering a wide spectrum of design-related topics.

  • “Ethics in design and manufacturing” by R. Roy.
  • “Development of data models and digital assistance systems to support data-driven sustainability decisions in engineering design” by B. Schleich.
  • “Human-centred design of efficient collaborative processes in manufacturing applications” by G. Michalos.
  • “Design challenges and approaches for implementing Product-as-a-Service as a special kind of IPS²” by A. Riel.
  • “Optimal design of additively manufactured metamaterials with extreme properties: limitations and challenges” by M. Montemurro.
  • “Exploiting AI driven simulations for the design of seamless human-robot collaborative workstations” by G. Michalos.
  • “Geometry assurance for megacastings in the automotive industry: challenges and research perspectives” by K. Wärmefjord.
  • “AI support in MRO engineering to accelerate repair decisions” by R. Stark.

Collaborative Working Groups and CMAG

The STC Dn ambassadors to the CWGs provided regular reports and updates.

  • Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing
  • Production Technologies and Systems for E-Mobility
  • Semiconductor and Microelectronic Manufacturing
  • Manufacturing for Sustainability

The representative of CMAG provided regular updates about CMAG activities.

STC Dn Strategic Positioning

  • The strategic positioning of STC Dn was discussed on a continuous basis.
  • The data analytics of term shifting from existing design literature was reported and discussed on a continuous basis.
  • The number of STC Dn papers published in CIRP Annals Volume 1 was discussed on a continuous basis. As the acceptance rate remained low, the consensus was that the priority would be to increase the number of paper submissions and the engagement of active Research Affiliates, Associate Members, and Fellows.

Other Business

  • The STC Dn officers met virtually, on a regular basis, throughout the year.
  • The STC Dn officers offered a variety of services (e.g., paper sponsorship service) that were intended to increase engagement in STC Dn.
  • The STC Dn officers were actively engaged in discussions with the STC A and STC O officers about cross-STC collaboration on emerging research topics.
