THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

Doctor Alessandro Balsamo - CIRP President 2025-2026

Dear visitor,

It is a great honor for me to serve as CIRP President for the Period September 2025 - August 2026. I would like to spend a few words to introduce the CIRP to you.

CIRP was founded in 1951  with the aim to address modern production science and technology through international co-operation. The International Academy for Production Engineering takes its abbreviated name CIRP from the French acronym of College International pour la Recherche en Productique. Today it includes some 600 members worldwide. The number of members is intentionally kept limited, to facilitate informal scientific exchanges and personal contacts.

CIRP has some 180 Fellows and Honorary Fellows who are internationally recognized scientists elected to be CIRP members for life. Due to the limited number of CIRP Fellow positions, the election of a Fellow is a lengthy, rigorous process ensuring the highest academic standard.

CIRP includes some 150 Associate members: well known scientists with high potential elected for three years and possibly renewed. Selected Associate members eventually become Fellows. Research Affiliates form a CIRP Network of young scientists active in manufacturing.

Invited members, particularly from countries not yet involved in CIRP, are also included in the CIRP community.

CIRP, although an academic organization, encourages participation of industry. Some 170 Corporate members follow the research work of CIRP and exchange information and opinions on industrial needs and perspectives.

CIRP aims to:
•    Promote scientific research in manufacturing.
•    Promote cooperative research among the members of the Academy.
•    Create opportunities for informal contacts among CIRP members at large.
•    Promote the industrial application of fundamental research work.
•    Receive feedback from industry on current and future industrial needs.
•    Publish papers, reports, annals and other publications.
•    Organize and sponsor international conferences, including its premier annual event, the General Assembly.

The vision of CIRP is to promote research and development among its members from Academia and Industry to contribute to environmentally sustainable global prosperity and wellbeing of society.

To contribute to these challenges efficiently, CIRP is organized into Scientific Technical Committees (STCs), a Cross STC and Collaborative Working Groups (CWGs). The CIRP life is articulated with a Winter Meetings in Paris (FR) in March and a General Assembly (GA) in August in a city that varies year after year. The intense week programme of GAs includes over 140 paper and ten keynote paper presentations from different fields of manufacturing, technical presentations by the Corporate members, and scientific and technical work within the STCs, Cross STC and CWGs. This is accompanied by a social program, aiming to maintain and deepen the friendly atmosphere of CIRP and create an informal environment where to exchange opinions.

The CIRP publishes two ISI journals: the CIRP Annals and the CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology (JMST). The Annals research papers are published in Volume I and also presented by the authors (Fellows, Associate, Corporate and Invited members) at the GA; keynote papers under the auspices of STCs and Cross STC are published in Volume II. The JMST is a regular journal open to all authors.

Aside journals, the CIRP maintains a full set of other publications:
•    Trilingual CIRP dictionaries of production engineering;
•    The CIRP Encyclopedia of production engineering (CIRPedia);
•    The Proceedings of the CIRP Conferences (CIRP Procedia);
•    CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering.

The CIRP runs the CIRP School, a week of a class and hands on lessons on a specific topic, where and when a fellow proposes and gets approval.

CIRP has its headquarters in Paris, staffed by permanent personnel.

I invite you to stay connected with the CIRP, follow our activities and share our exciting vision of shaping the future of manufacturing sustainably to promote prosperity and wellbeing worldwide.
