In 2021, the Scientific Technical Committee Cutting STC “C” continued its work in processes and techniques used to shape components by material removal under the leadership of the current officers:
Chair: D. Biermann, Vice Chair: S. Melkote, Secretary: P.-J. Arrazola
The group held two virtual meetings in 2021 due to the Pandemic COVID-19: On February 19th and August 27th during the virtual GA of Munich, Germany.
The two working groups launched in 2016, (i) Friction Data for Modelling of Machining and (ii) Material Constitutive Models and Data for Modelling of Metal Cutting presented their progress. The WG of Material Constitutive Models and Data for Modelling of Metal Cutting finished in the CIRP Winter Meeting February in Paris. The WG of Friction Data for Modelling of Machining finished in the CIRP GA at Munich.
The recommendations provided by both WG will provide understanding of tool-chip contact and material constitutive models and they will assist researchers and industry practitioners in deciding which models to use for a specific work material and tool-chip friction, extending the 2017 STC “C” Keynote paper conclusions.
In addition, few technical topics were presented and discussed in the two STC “C” meetings, due to the shorter duration of the Virtual STC C meetings compared to regular in-person meetings (2h instead of 4). These presentations are listed below.
Virtual STC “C” meeting, February 2021
At the Paris meeting – attended by 81 members, 20 research affiliates, and 10 guests, the following presentations on cooperative work and potential keynotes ware made. Due to time restrictions in the virtual meeting, there were no technical presentations.
Cooperative work within STC-C:
1. Friction Data for Modelling of Machining (V. Schulze)
2. Work on Material Constitutive Data for Modelling of Machining (J. Outeiro, P. J. Arrazola, A. Zabel, D. Umbrello)
Proposal for Keynotes:
- Machinability: I.S. Jawahir
- Gear Cutting: N. Sugita
A poll was carried out and a majority of the attendees approved to start the two proposals for cooperative work.
Virtual STC “C“ meeting, during CIRP GA in Munich, Germany, August 2021
At the STC “C” meeting held at the GA in Munich, Germany – attended by 60 members, 14 research affiliates, and 12 guests – the following cooperative work and technical contributions were presented:
Proposals for cooperative work within the STC-C
1. Friction Data for Modelling of Machining (V. Schulze).
Technical Contributions relevant to Keynotes

Keynote paper presentation and paper session on “Cutting” in Munich, Germany, August 2021
The STC “C” keynote paper entitled “Structured and Textured Cutting Tool Surfaces for Machining” authored by Tuğrul Özel, Dirk Biermann, Toshiyuki Enomoto, Paul Mativenga was presented in the public session of Part I of the CIRP GA.
In addition, in the STC “C” paper session (Part I) of the General Assembly in Munich, a total of 18 papers were presented and discussed.
