THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

The Scientific Technical Committee Surfaces (STC S) had two meetings in 2024 – during the CIRP Winter Meetings, the session was held on February 22nd while the General Assembly (GA) meeting was held on the 22nd of August. 126 and 99 participants attended the STC S Winter and GA Meetings respectively.

At the Winter Meetings, updates on the STC S keynotes for 2024, 2025 and 2026 were given. A proposal for the 2027 STCS keynote paper was presented and discussed. The initiative was appreciated and it was decided to further discuss a more detailed proposal at the General Assembly. An update on an ongoing cooperative activity dealing with surface features in metal additive manufacturing was presented by J. Fox and discussed in the STC. From this cooperative activity, an initiative to prepare an essay for the CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering (CNTPE) arose. It was decided to discuss a formal proposal for the topic at the GA Meeting.

Seven short technical presentations were given, each were followed by lively discussions:

•    Comparison of XRD and Hole Drilling Method For Determination of Residual Stress in Additively Manufactured Components (M. Pantawane, S. Rakurty, S. Kota, N. Rangaswamy, L. Rothleutner, V. Bedekar)
•    Surface roughness of the parts produced by Tomographic Volumetric Printing (TVP) process (A. Sujon, B. Wang, D. Quagliotti, A. Islam)
•    Systematic analysis of the influence of surface topography on wettability (B. Mullany, J. Redford)
•    Enhancing Surface Topography characteristics in Machining of Sintered ZnO Electro-ceramics: An Approach of Switching to Defined Cutting Geometry with Ultrasound-Assistance (F. Pusavec, J. Dugar)
•    Enhancing Drillability in Al-SiC Metal Matrix Composites: An Analysis of Feed Rate Impact on Tool Wear and Surface Quality (R. Bertolini, S. Bruschi, A. Ghiotti)
•    Surface integrity of machined composite parts (S. Ashworth, J. Patrick, A. Fairclough, J. Meredith, Y. Takikawa, K. Kerrigan)
•    Towards defects-free replication of polymeric micro/nano surface structures using novel self-lubricating nanocomposite moulds (N. Zhang, T. Guan, F. Fang, M. Gilchrist)

At the GA Meeting, future keynote paper updates were provided. He topic for the 2027 STC S keynote paper was discussed in detail and approved. Following the update on the ongoing cooperative activity of STC S, Jason Fox’s formal proposal for a CNTPE essay was approved. H. Haitjema asked for approval to hand over the duties of CNTPE Section Editor for STC S to B. Mullany. The STC thanked H. Haitjema for his service as Section Editor and approved the handover to his successor.

Seven short technical presentations were given, each were followed by lively discussions:

•    Three-dimensional modelling of surface topography in ultrasonic vibration assisted diamond turning (J. Wang, D. De Simone, M. Lai)
•    Texture processing to prevent barnacle adhesion in submerged solar power generation (A. Yui, H. Suzuki)
•    Robust texture design for circular polymers (J. Berglund, K. Harris, T. Olsson,
K. Wärmefjord, R. Söderberg)
•    Fabrication of precise superhydophilic spots on superhydrophobic surface using laser process and green post process for biomedical application (D.-M. Chun, M. I. Bappy, C.‑S. Kim)
•    Surface generation of extruded thermoplastic materials flowing through carbon fibre-polyether-ether-ketone freeform filament fabricated dies (A. H. Aimon, S. Singh, D. B. Pedersen, M. Calaon, G. Tosello)
•    Atom Probe Tomography study of a black oxide layer before and after sliding conditions (L. Sanchez, S. Kota, J. Poplawsky, V. Bedekar)
•    Integration of deep rolling into the build-up phase of powder-bed-based metal additive manufacturing (D. Meyer, A. Tönjes)

Details of the technical presentations and discussions at the 2024 STC S meetings can be found in the complete minutes of these meetings, prepared by D. Meyer, technical secretary of STC S. The minutes including annexes are available to CIRP members at the CIRP website.

During the CIRP General Assembly Part 1, an STC S paper session was held. A total of twelve high quality papers were presented on August 21st and good discussions followed all papers. Details are available on the Publications section of the CIRP website and on ScienceDirect.
