Paper Presentations and Technical Reports

At the two STC O meetings in 2023, a total of 16 technical presentations (7 in February, and 9 in August) were delivered and discussed. The talks in February and August focused on STC O research area (2) “Orchestration, management and operation of production systems and networks”.


CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering

In terms of the CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering, three proposals were provided during the STC O February meeting and accordingly accepted from STCO.

  • Implementing Release Control Policies in Discrete-Event Simulation Models, by M. Urgo et al.

The proposal is supported by the meeting participants and will therefore be submitted to the Editorial Committee. 

The meetings of the Scientific Technical Committee O were held digitally on 17th February 2022 (Paris, FR) (82 members, 10 corporate members, 7 research affiliates, 8 invited guests), and in a hybrid format on 26th August 2022 (Bilbao, ES) (44 members, 7 corporate members, 4 research affiliates, 12 invited guests).

Paper Presentations and Technical Reports

During the General Assembly in summer, one keynote paper presentation was delivered by A. Nassehi, and in the STC O session, 11 regular papers were presented and discussed.

At the two STC O meetings in 2022, a total of 10 technical presentations (4 in February, and 6 in August) were delivered and discussed. While the February talks focused on STC O research area (1) “Conceptualisation and shaping of innovative evolving production systems”, the talks in August were organized around STC O focus area (2) “Orchestration, management and operation of production systems and networks”.


CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering

In terms of the CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering, two proposals were provided during the STC O August meeting:

  • Proposal 1: Artificial Intelligence for Production Management and Control Towards Mass Personalization of Global Networks by D. Mourtzis, J. Angelopoulos, N. Panopoulos
  • Proposal 2: Decision making for fast productivity ramp-up of manufacturing systems by M. Magnanini, B. Montavon, B. Epureanu

The two proposals are supported by the meeting participants and will therefore be submitted to the Editorial Committee.

STC O Mission and Topics

In 2021, the Mission & Topics of STC O have been discussed and revised. The updated STC O Mission now is:

“STC O addresses optimised design, modelling, orchestration, management and operation of sustainable, societally-conscious production systems.

Production systems encompass work cells, lines, factories, networks, service systems and other value-generating industrial organisations.”

Research areas thereby include:

  • Conceptualisation and shaping of innovative evolving production systems
  • Orchestration, management and operation of production systems and networks
  • Organisation of human-centric production systems
  • Optimisation of circular production systems
  • Digitalisation in production systems

The meetings of the Scientific Technical Committee O were held on 21st February 2019 in Paris (72 members, 19 research affiliates, 10 invited guests), and on 23rd August 2019 in Birmingham, UK (51 members, 13 research affiliates, 15 invited guests).

At the two STC O Meetings in 2019, a total of 14 technical presentations (7 in February, and 7 in August) were delivered and discussed. All the technical talks were organized around special topics such as

  • global production networks, and
  • fast ramp-up management.

In August, J. Váncza summarized the contributions STC O made so far to environmental sustainability in the context of the new, extended vision of CIRP.

At the two STC O Meetings in 2017, a total of 13 technical presentations (6 in February, and 7 in August) were delivered and discussed. Most of the technical talks were organized around special topics such as robustness and cooperation. In August, an invited talk was also delivered (K. Ferdows).

Support of Collaborative Working Groups

• In February, support of the Collaborative Working Group on Urban Factories was confirmed. The CWG will be hosted by STC O.
• In August, STC O’s support for a new CWG on Additive Manufacturing was provided.

Further matters

Because of the sudden death of K. Ueda, a short memorial was given by E. Westkämper. As regards the CMS series coordinated by K. Ueda, an STC-O board was formed under the coordination of R. Teti to guide and renew the working group concerning CMS organizational issues and relevant topics of CMS. Other colleagues were asked to support in an open group.

At the January Meeting, it was approved that the 2016 Keynote Paper will be “Cyber-physical systems in manufacturing”, co-ordinated by L. Monostori and B. Kádár, and co-authored by T. Bauernhansl, S. Kondoh, S. Kumara, G. Reinhart, O. Sauer, W. Sihn, K. Ueda.
For 2017 two proposals were presented:
• “Social science perspective of manufacturing” (T. Kaihara, N. Nishino, K. Ueda, M. Tseng, J. Vancza, …)
• “Learning Factories for future oriented research and education in manufacturing” (E. Abele, G. Chryssolouris, W. Sihn, J. Metternich, …)

During the GA in Nantes, the audience supported both proposals and asked to find a way to accept both of them. The decision will be done in February 2015. L. Monostori suggested a shift of the social science approach to the GA that will be held in Japan in 2018 with respect to the CWG on Learning Factories which will end in August 2016.

Corporate Members' Activities and Issues

During the Paris January Meeting and the GA in August, STC O Vice-Chairman J. Vancza reported on the CMAG meetings and the aim of CIRP to encourage paper presentations is collaboration between Corporate Members and Members.

The meetings of the Scientific Technical Committee "O" were held on 24 January, 2013 in Paris, France (76 members, 12 research affiliates, 28 guests), and on 23 August, 2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark (49 members, 17 research affiliates, 17 guests).

The major activities of STC O were the following:

Manufacturing Systems Conferences

Proposal was approved to have the 48th CIRP Conference on Manufacturing Systems (CMS), 3 - 5 June, 2015 in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. Conference Chairman: R. Teti.
No other issue was remaining from the Track 3 meetings.

Keynote Papers

At the General Assembly, it was confirmed that the 2014 Keynote Paper will be “Design and management of manufacturing systems for production quality”, co-ordinated by T. Tolio and M. Colledani, and co-authored, depending on contribution, by G. Lanza, R. Schmitt, J. Hu, J. Váncza, Y. Koren, D. Ceglarek and A. Fischer.
For 2015 one proposal was approved: “Prognosis for cloud manufacturing” (provisional title), initiated by R. Gao and L. Wang. The proposal was supported also by R. Teti, D. Dornfeld, M. Mori, and A. Vijayaraghavan.
For 2016 one keynote proposal was initiated: “Cyber-physical systems in manufacturing” by L. Monostori and B. Kádár. The proposal was supported also by S. Kumara, G. Reinhart, O. Sauer, W. Sihn and K. Ueda.

During the STC O Paper Session at the General Assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark, one keynote and 18 papers were presented and discussed.
At the two STC O Meetings in 2013, a total of 17 technical presentations (8 in January, and 9 in August) were delivered and discussed. In August two technical presentations have been postponed to the 2014 January Meeting.

Corporate Members' Activities and Issues

Both during the January Meeting and the General Assembly, Vice-Chairman of STC O, R. Teti reported on the CMAG meetings and the actual efforts of CIRP aimed at increasing the involvement of corporate members within the activities of STCs. During the STC O Paper Session of the GA, a cooperative industry-academy paper was jointly presented.

During the STC O Meeting at the GA, new officers were unanimously elected:

The meetings of the Scientific Technical Committee “O” were held on 26 January, 2012 in Paris, France (57 members, 10 research affiliates, 24 guests), and on 24 August, 2012 in  Hong Kong, China (42 members, 14 research affiliates, 14 guests).

Proposal was approved to have the 47th CIRP CMS in 2014 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Chair: H. ElMaraghy.

In January, STC O supported the new Collaborative Working Group (CWG) on Continuous Maintenance.

Keynote Papers

At the General Assembly, it was confirmed that the 2013 Keynote Paper will be “Scalability in Manufacturing Systems Design and Operation: State-of-the-Art and Future Developments Roadmap”, co-ordinated by G. Putnik and co-authored by A. Sluga, H. ElMaraghy, R. Teti, Y. Koren, T. Tolio and B. Hon.
For 2014 one proposal was approved: “Design and management of manufacturing systems for production quality”, presented, in the absence of T. Tolio, by M. Colledani.
STC O is soliciting new keynote topic proposals for 2015 at the next January Meeting.

Paper Presentations and Technical Reports

During the STC O Paper Session at the General Assembly in Hong Kong, China, one keynote and 20 papers were presented and discussed.
At the two STC O Meetings in 2012, a total of 18 technical presentations (10 in January and 8 in August) were delivered and discussed.

Corporate Members' Activities and Issues

Both during the January Meeting and the General Assembly, Vice-chairman of STC O, R. Teti reported on the CMAG meeting and the actual efforts of CIRP aimed at increasing the involvement of corporate members within the activities of STCs. There was a call for more GA presentations and technical talks of Corporate Members. Presentation of new members would be highly welcome.


The Meetings of the Scientific Technical Committee “O” were held on 27 January, 2011 in Paris, France (48 members, 11 research affiliates, 22 guests), and on 26 August, 2011 in  Budapest, Hungary (51 members, 6 research affiliates, 11 guests).

Manufacturing Systems Conferences

No issue remaining from the Track 3 meetings.

Working Groups

During the General Assembly in August, R. Roy proposed launching a new Collaborative Working Group (CWG) on Continuous Maintenance. The proposal was supported.
No other CWG issue remaining from the Track 3 meetings.

Keynote Papers

At the General Assembly, it was approved that the 2012 Keynote Paper will be “Complexity in engineering design and manufacturing” co-ordinated by W. ElMaraghy, and co-authored by H. ElMaraghy, T. Tomiyama, H-P. Wiendahl, L. Monostori, D. Mourtzis and P. Butala.  The 2013 Keynote Paper will be “Scalability in Manufacturing Systems Design and Operation: State-of-the-Art and Future Developments Roadmap” co-ordinated by G. Putnik and co-authored by A. Sluga, H. ElMaraghy, R. Teti, Y. Koren, T. Tolio and B. Hon. For 2014 two proposals were presented: “Management of design principles of manufacturing systems” by W.J. Zhang, and “Design and management of manufacturing systems for production quality” by T. Tulio. The decision will be taken during the 2012 January Meeting.

Further on, H. ElMaraghy presented a Track 3 Keynote proposal for 2013: “Variety: Definitions, modelling and management”. The proposal was unanimously supported.

During the STC O Paper Session at the General Assembly in Budapest (Hungary), one keynote and 19 papers were presented and discussed. At the two STC O Meetings in 2011, a total of 17 technical presentations (10 in January and 7 in August) were given and discussed.

Chairman’s Address

During the January Meeting in Paris, Chairman of STC O, K. Ueda delivered a talk entitled “A Prospect for Emerging Fields in STC O - A Challenging Direction to Value Creation”.

Corporate Members' Activities and Issues

Both during the January Meeting and the General Assembly, Vice-Chairman of STC O, R. Teti reported on the CMAG meeting and recent efforts of CIRP aimed at increasing the involvement of corporate members within the activities of STCs.

Task Force on “Global Manufacturing Strategies”

During the General Assembly, F. Jovane reported on the work of the Task Force on “Global Manufacturing Strategies” (TF-GSM). Main findings of this work are going to be published as a CIRP white paper

 

 

 


The Meetings of the Scientific Technical Committee “O” were held on 21 January 2010 in Paris, France (68 participants), and on 27 August 2010 in Pisa, Italy (73 participants).

No issue remaining from the Track 3 meetings.

Working Groups

The CWG on Energy and Resource Efficiency &Effectiveness (EREE) was proposed by J. Sutherland, D. Dornfeld, J. Duflou and presented by Duflou.
Unanimous decision was to support this CWG cross track.
No other issue remaining from the Track 3 meetings.

Future Directions of STC O

During the General Assembly in Pisa (Italy), four presentation on future directions of STCO were illustrated: K. Ueda, “Forward-Looking View of Emerging Fields of Importance within or Closely Related to STC O”; J. Vancza, ”Production Management with Respect to Economy and Ecology”; K. Windt: ”Future Research Fields of STC O”; M. Grunow, ”Challenges in production operations and emerging opportunities for STC-O”.

Keynote Papers

At the General Assembly in Pisa (Italy), it was decided that the 2011 Keynote Paper will be “Cooperative, responsive manufacturing enterprises” co-ordinated by J. Vancza, L. Monostori, S. R. Kumara, H. Van Brussel, M. Tseng, E. Lutters, P. Valckenaers; and the 2012 Keynote Paper will be “Manufacturing Complexity in Engineering Design and Manufacturing” coordinated by W. El Maraghy. The following proposal for the 2013 keynote paper was submitted by G. Putnik: “Scalability in Manufacturing Systems Design and Operation: State-of-the-Art and Future Developments Roadmap” (G. Putnik, A. Sluga, H. ElMaraghy, W. ElMaraghy, R. Teti). The decision will be taken during the 2011 January Meeting.
