The Scientific Technical Committee on Electro-Physical, Chemical, Laser, and related Additive Manufacturing processes (STC E) held two in-person meetings in 2025. One during the CIRP Winter Meeting in Paris and the second during the CIRP General Assembly in Stockholm. Both meetings were well attended by 89 and 102 participants, respectively.

Strategy on cultivating future excellence and leadership through inclusion
For a number of years, the Officers and senior STC E members have been keen to actively include young researchers and other academics outside the CIRP family. We try to show an open attitude towards new potential members, and, in this way, diversify the STC E audience and membership. We strongly believe that this approach creates a pipeline of talented researchers that will ensure the vibrancy of STC E scientific discussions and contributions as well as develop future leaders.
We are happy to report that this action has been fruitful. Figure 1 shows the number of attendees of STC E meetings from 2020 to 2025. We see stable attendance from our Members and Fellows accompanied by an increasing number of guests, indicated in green, from 2022.

Contribution to CIRP Annals
This year, 39 STC E draft manuscripts were submitted to the CIRP Editorial Committee, of which 20 were accepted for publication in the CIRP Annals Vol. 1 and scheduled for presentation at the CIRP General Assembly in Stockholm (Sweden). All papers were presented. In addition, Adam Clare presented the 2025 STC E KN on “Metal multi-material additive manufacturing: Overcoming barriers to implementation”, during the CIRP GA general session on the opening day. The keynote was well received by the audience.
Summary of the STC E Meeting in Paris on February 21st, 2025
Keynotes
• Wessel Wits presented an update on the 2025 KN: “Multi-material additive manufacturing: Overcoming barriers to implementation” organized by Adam Clare.
• Alessandro Fortunato presented an update on the 2026 KN: “Laser based manufacturing for electric traction and energy storage systems: State of the art and new challenges”.
• Ajay Malshe presented an update for the 2028 KN: “In-space Manufacturing (ISM) for Earth and Space: Materials, Processes, and Testing”.
• Michael Sealy presented a proposal for the 2027 KN: “Interlayer reinforced domains enabled by additive manufacturing”, which was accepted.
• Sarah Wolff and Frederik Zanger presented a proposal for the 2029 KN: “Recycling production waste through additive manufacturing”, which was accepted.
Technical presentations
Ten technical presentations were presented each followed by a lively Q&A.
CIRP and CIRP Sponsored Conferences
The audience was made aware of the following (sponsored) conferences:
• 22nd ISEM 2025 - 3-5 June 2025 - Vancouver, BC, Canada - organized by Adam Clare of University of British Columbia
• 23rd ISEM 2027– 28 June - 1 July 2027 - Cardiff - organized by Debajyoti Bhaduri of University of Cardiff
Summary of the STC E Meeting in Stockholm on August 22nd, 2025
In light of the overwhelming number of guests (28), representing 27% of the audience, the Chair requested the STC E members to welcome our guests with a warm-hearted applause.
A brief “State of STC-E” was given, discussing attendance through recent years (doubled since 2021), statistics on CIRP Annals papers, and numbers as well as acceptance criteria on STC E technical presentations.
Keynotes
• Adam Clare presented some final remarks on the 2025 KN: “Multi-material additive manufacturing: Overcoming barriers to implementation”.
• Alessandro Fortunato presented an update on the 2026 KN: “Laser based manufacturing for electric power train”.
• Michael Sealy presented an update on the 2027 KN: “Locally engineered materials by hybrid additive manufacturing”.
• Ajay Malshe presented an update on the 2028 KN: “In-space Manufacturing (ISM)”.
• Sarah Wolff and Frederik Zanger presented an update on the 2029 KN: “Recycling production waste through additive manufacturing”.
Technical presentations
Twenty proposals for technical presentations were received by the STC E officers. Ten technical presentations were selected and presented, of which four were presented by an Associate Member, one was presented by a Research Affiliate, and five were presented by a Guest. An effort was made by the Officers to have diverse presenters from various backgrounds and career positions.
