STC C - 2023 Annual Report

In 2023, the Scientific Technical Committee Cutting STC “C” continued its work on processes and techniques used to shape components by material removal under the leadership of the current officers:

Chair: S. Melkote, Vice Chair: P.-J. Arrazola, Secretary: V. Schulze

The group held one meeting on 2023 February 22th and another meeting in 2023 August 25th during the GA in Dublin, Ireland.

The cooperative working group coordinated by I.S. Jawahir on Integrated Machining Performance for Assessment of Cutting Tools (IMPACT) launched in 2021 presented its progress.

This WG will provide understanding and will assist researchers and industry practitioners in the following specific topics

  • A: (D. Axinte and Z. Liao). Survey of current best-practices in machinability evaluation and industrial knowledge for maximizing machining performance
  • (H. Attia and A. Sadek). Physics-based model development and fundamental characterization of cutting tool performance
  • (P. Mativenga and J. Schoop). Engineered design of cutting tool material, geometry, and coating for optimal performance and customized applications
  • (A. Shokrani and T. Schmitz). Design and development of smart tooling/sensors for closed-loop
  • adaptive machining.
  • (M. Dix and H. Ghadbeigi). AI-based multi-objective optimization of total machining performance, including tool-wear, chip-form, surface integrity, cutting forces, dynamic stability, part accuracy, etc.

In addition, technical topics and proposals for keynotes were presented and discussed in the two STC “C” meetings. These presentations are listed below.

I- STC “C”-Winter meeting, Paris February 2023

At the meeting – attended by 75 members, 9 research affiliates, and 16 guests, the following cooperative work and technical contributions and potential keynotes were made.

Cooperative work within STC-C:

  • Integrated Machining Performance for Assessment of Cutting Tools (IMPACT)

Technical presentations

  • Cryogenic minimum quantity lubrication for challenging drilling operations. J. Saelzer
  • On wear of cemented carbide tooling in machining aluminum alloys for e-mobility. V. Bushlya
  • High-speed cutting of wood material. K. Güzel
  • Natural rocks as an alternative cutting tool material. B. Bergmann
  • Machining process monitoring using triboemissions. S. Subbiah
  • Towards physics-based machinability assessment of metallic alloys. A. Malakizadi
  • Simulation of laser powder bed fusion and post processing by milling to predict component deformation along the process chain with AlSi10Mg. F. Zanger
  • Towards the in-situ identification of a shear stress based friction model. C. Courbon

Keynote Papers

  • Keynote for 2023: Digital twin for cutting processes. T. Bergs
  • Keynote for 2024: Sustainable Machining. A. Shokrani
  • Keynote for 2025: Integrated Machining Performance for Assessment of Cutting Tools (IMPACT). I.S. Jawahir.
  • Keynote for 2026: Part distortion in machining: prediction, measurement, and control. J.C. Outeiro

Following this, there was a plenary discussion in future Keynote Topics. D. Biermann proposed to deal with the Improvement of machining simulation tools with respect to lubricants. Sobieski proposed to deal with Solid Ceramic tools and was assisted by Elkouby, who proposed to deal with Finish tools compared to roughing tools. Finally, Zanger proposed to deal with the Role of additive manufacturing in machining. There was no decision on the keynote proposals at this time and coordinators were encouraged to come up with a more elaborated proposal in the GA-meeting.

CIRP/sponsored conferences with STC-C approval

  • MIC 2023. B. Denkena

II- STC “C“ meeting, during CIRP GA in Dublin, Ireland, August 2022

At the STC “C” meeting held at the GA in Bilbao, Spain – attended by 80 members, 5 research affiliates, and 22 guests – the following cooperative work and technical contributions and potential keynotes were presented:

Cooperative work within the STC-C

  • Integrated Machining Performance for Assessment of Cutting Tools (IMPACT). I.S. Jawahir, Liao, Attia, Boing, Shokrani, Kolar, Ghadbeigi

Technical presentations

  • Refinement of metallographic methods to accurately detect white layer, V.Bedekar
  • Semi-active High Performance Milling Tool with Integrated Process Monitoring, H.C. Möhring.
  • Pulsating high-pressure assisted machining approach, F. Pusavec
  • Numerical simulation of BTA deep-hole-drilling using different models, A. Zabel
  • AIA RoMan (Aerospace Industries Association Rotor Manufacturing) collaborative work, S. Engin and D. Novovic
  • Data management for the digital transformation of cutting process: How to overcome the solution heterogeneity, D.Y.Lee

Keynote Paper Presentations

  • Keynote for 2023: Digital twin for cutting processes. T. Bergs
  • Keynote for 2024: Sustainable Machining. A. Shokrani
  • Keynote for 2025: Integrated Machining Performance for Assessment of Cutting Tools (IMPACT). I.S. Jawahir.
  • Keynote for 2026: Part distortion in machining: prediction, measurement, and control. J.C. Outeiro.

After these presentations future proposals for keynotes were presented:

  • Advanced methods for application and modeling of cooling lubricants in metal-cutting processes, Biermann
  • Role of additive manufacturing in cutting, F. Zanger

Both proposals were intensively discussed and the audience was in favor for both of them. Finally, the sequence was agreed by audience and the two coordinators to be Biermann 2027 and then Zanger 2028.

CIRP Novel Topics in Production Engineering (CNTPE)

T. Tollio presented the format of CNTPE and asked the audience for proposals for this. In the meantime, there is a new proposal which is being discussed by the authors and officers.

CIRP/sponsored conferences with STC-C approval

CIRP Conference on BioManufacturing is approved. Report on CIRP CMMO in Karlsruhe is appreciated.

Other business

The topic discussed is the cooperation with the RoMan group. The goal is to identify challenges and foster collaboration between STC C and corporate members. The attendees unanimously approve of this initiative to reserve one technical presentation slot in each STC-C meeting for relevant industry speakers that can share their technical challenges with members.
