STC P - 2017 Annual Report

The Scientific Technical Committee Precision Engineering and Metrology (STC P) had two meetings in 2017 - on February 16th, 2017 in Paris and on August 25th, 2017 in Lugano, Switzerland. The STC P meetings were attended by 60 members and 23 invited guests in Paris and 42 members and 16 invited guests in Lugano.

Details of the technical presentations and discussions at the 2017 STC P meetings are in the minutes written by Andreas Archenti, STC P Secretary. The minutes are available to CIRP members at the CIRP website.

H. Bosse, H. Kunzmann, J. Pratt, S. Schlamminger, I. Robinson, M. de Podesta, P. Shore, A. Balsamo, P. Morantz are the authors of the 2017 STC P keynote paper entitled "Contributions of precision engineering to the revision of the SI". The keynote presentation was delivered by H. Bosse in the STC P Technical Session on August 22nd. Discussions were made for the keynote presentation in the STC P August meeting on August 25th. STC-P thanked the authors of the keynote paper for their efforts.

The STC P paper session was held on August 21st and 22nd. It included 11 interesting paper presentations, covering a wide range of precision engineering and metrology related topics. The papers dealt with topics on 1) Measurement technologies ("Future gear metrology based on areal measurements and evaluations" by G. Goch, "Function-oriented measurements and uncertainty evaluation of micro-gears for lifetime prognosis" by B. Haefner, "A ball dome artefact for coordinate metrology performance evaluation of a five axis machine tool" by R. Mayer, "Autonomous metrology for robot mounted 3D vision systems" by P. Kinnell, 2) Precision Engineering ("A top-down equivalent stiffness approach for prediction of deviation sources in machine tool joints" by A. Archenti, "Laser micro machining beyond the diffraction limit using a photonic nanojet" by T. Uenohara, "Uncertainty evaluation of indentation modulus in the nano-range: contact stiffness contribution" by G. Genta, 3) Dimensional measurement (“Influence of surface roughness on computed tomography dimensional measurements” by S. Carmignato, “Theoretical analyses of a novel in-process depth measurements of sub-diffraction limited microgrooves based on near-field optical response” by S. Takahashi, 4) Freeform surfaces (“Novel method of positioning optical freeform surfaces based on fringe deflectometry” by X. Zhang, “Dependant Gaussian Processes Regression for Intelligent Sampling of Freeform and Structured Surfaces” by Y. Yin.
