STC G - 2013 Annual Report

The year of 2013 was successful for the Scientific Technical Committee STC “G”. The number of participants was increased.  In the January meeting in Paris, we had 52 participants and at the General Assembly in Copenhagen in August the attendance was of 50 experts.

In the January STC-G meeting the contents of the 2013 keynote paper “Sustainability in abrasive processes“ given by Mr. Aurich were confirmed and approved. The 2014 keynote paper "High Energy Fluid Jet Machining" coordinated by Mr. Axinte and Mr. Karpuschewski was also confirmed and the outline was approved. An update of the 2015 keynote paper “Abrasive Machining of Advanced Aerospace Alloys and Composites" coordinated by Mr. Klocke, Mr. Soo and Mr. Karpuschewski was given and the contents were accepted by the audience.

Eight topics in the session of the technical contribution were presented in the January STC-G meeting.  Those are grinding inside blood vessels, life cycle of grinding wheels, energy efficient cooling supply, chip formation mechanisms, modeling of the structure of grinding wheels, thermal load distribution in the grinding zone, acoustic emission for contact detection in ultrasonic polishing, ultrasonically assisted grinding.  Because of large number of technical contributions this time, no laboratory presentation was given.

The contributions of STC G to Part I of the General Assembly in Copenhagen included the keynote paper titled “Sustainability in abrasive processes“ given by Mr. Aurich and 16 regular papers. The keynote paper was well received. It gives an excellent overview on the whole energy consumption and requirements necessary for surface quality. The strong commitment of the author to sustainability topics makes it a strong and valuable tool in the discussion on sustainability in manufacturing. The other papers covered a broad range of topics including diverse contributions on different fine finishing technologies, on honing, wet ice blasting, dressing technologies, grinding of ZrO2 – ceramics, control of grinding against burning, grinding with textured wheels and coolant supply in grinding and bone grinding.

The STC G technical meeting in the Part II of the General Assembly in Copenhagen was well visited with 50 participants and 10 technical contributions. The topics covered grinding and polishing of optical components of largely different size, simulation of grinding for control of burn, measuring of surface defects, dressing with thermochemical effect, nano-CT evaluation of polishing wheels, crack observation due to wire sawing, observation, assessment and theory of mass finishing processes and manufacturing and preparation of diamond wheels with lasers.  The keynote paper for 2013 was fully accepted and well received. The contents of the keynote paper 2014 "High Energy Fluid Jet Machining", coordinated by Mr. Axinte and Mr. Karpuschewski were presented and again confirmed. An update of the keynote paper 2015 “Abrasive Machining of Advanced Aerospace Alloys and Composites" coordinated by Mr. Klocke, Mr. Soo and Mr. Karpuschewski was also confirmed. For the next meeting in January 2014 in Paris the audience decided to encourage presentations on “Abrasive machining of advanced aerospace alloys and composites” and “Surface fine finishing technologies”. However, presentation on other abrasives related topics will also be welcome.
