Additionally, STC Dn members actively attended and supported the collaborative working group meetings as well as the cross-STC group meetings.

During the meetings the following CIRP-owned conferences were reported or discussed.
• 26th CIRP Design Conference 2016 (Stockholm, Sweden)
• 27th CIRP Design Conference 2017 (Cranfield, UK)
• 28th CIRP Design Conference 2018 (Nantes, France)
• CIRP CAT Conference 2016 (Gothenburg, Sweden)
• CIRP CAT Conference 2018 (Milano, Italy)
• CIRP IPS2 2017 (Copenhagen, Denmark)
• CIRP IPS2 2018 (Linköping, Sweden)

STC Dn has been working on, or is preparing the following keynote papers. STC Dn members gave them comments to upcoming keynote papers:
• 2016 – “Design for additive Manufacturing”, M.K. Thompson, et al.
• 2017 – “Design for reduction of energy use consumption” J. Duflou et al.
• 2018 – “Tolerancing and Design under Uncertainty”, E. Morse, et al.
• 2019 – “New Engineering Capabilities to Develop Smart Products,” T. Tomiyama, et al.
• 2020 – “Design for Additive Manufacturing, Tools and Methods,” T. Vaneker, et al.

Dn Publications

During the 65th CIRP General Assembly in Cape Town, 13 Dn papers were presented and discussed, which is an increase of one compared with the previous year.

Technical Presentations

During the February (Paris) meeting, the following technical presentations were given in two areas. The first area covered “Design of smart systems”:
• Structure for Perceived Quality classification and ranking (R. Söderberg)
• Creating an intelligent digital mock-up for supporting multi-variation in assembly line (A. Marzano)
• The iPodia Alliance – learning together for a better world (S. Lu)

During the Portugal meeting, the following technical presentations were given related to “Digital design solutions for smart and complex products”:
• Product Lifecycle Management for Hybrid Manufacture (V. Dhokia, S.T. Newman, A. Nassehi, A. Shokrani, J.M. Flynn)
• New CAD challenges for Additive Manufacturing (N. Anwer, L. Matthieu)
• Next Generation PLM in the context of Smart Industry (M. Abramovici)

During the Portugal meeting, the following short pitch presentations were presented to discuss STC Dn topics and research directions.
• Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) as enabler for the digitalization of manufacturing (D. Mourtzis)
• Digital Service Engineering (R. Roy)
• Design of the next generation of networked Smart Product-Service-Systems (Smart Engineering) (M. Abramovici)
• Development, management, distribution and use of digital twins (R. Stark)

Other Business

At the Paris meeting, STC Dn initiated discussions around the STC directions. To do so, an interactive session format was employed to facilitate discussions, followed by group discussion in three groups. in the form of word clouds. The outcome was made into a summary document and presented to the members during the Portugal meeting. Further elaboration will be made by the Officers and will be presented at the next February meeting in Paris.
