STC C - 2016 Annual report

In 2016, the Scientific Technical Committee Cutting STC “C” continued its dedicated work with respect to processes and techniques used to shape components by material removal under the leadership of the current officers:
Chair: R. M’Saoubi, Vice Chair: D. Biermann, Secretary: S. Melkote.

The group held two meetings in 2016: On February 18th in Paris, France and August 26th in Guimaraes, Portugal.

In 2016, STC “C” launched two cooperative working groups to address specific aspects of friction and material constitutive data used in modelling of machining. Through the collective efforts of STC “C” members participating in these two working groups, it is expected that commonly used friction and constitutive models will be systematically benchmarked against each other and against carefully obtained experimental data to determine their accuracy. The recommendations made by the two working groups are expected to advance our understanding of the advantages and limitations of friction and material constitutive models reported in the literature. In doing so, they will provide guidance to researchers and industry practitioners regarding which models to use for a specific work material.

In addition, a number of technical topics were presented and discussed in the two STC “C” meetings. These presentations are listed below. New guidelines for organizing STC meetings put forth by the CIRP Council in 2016 were followed in organizing the August 26th, 2016 STC-C meeting in Guimaraes, Portugal.

The STC “C” keynote paper entitled “Cryogenically-assisted Processing of Materials”, authored by I.S. Jawahir, H. Attia, D. Biermann, J. Duflou, F. Klocke, D. Meyer, S.T. Newman, F. Pusavec, M. Putz, J. Rech, V. Schulze was presented in the “Cutting” (“C”) session (Part I).
In addition, in the STC “C” paper session (Part 1) of the General Assembly in Guimaraes, a total of 20 papers were presented and discussed.
