Accomplishments

Andras Markus was scientific advisor at the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI), and professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics as well as at the Budapest Corvinus University.

Just as his mentor, the late Joe Hatvany, he was an admirer and server of the engineering profession. His main research concern was how to support engineering problem solving by using methods of artificial intelligence. While working on problems in mechanical design, manufacturing process planning, scheduling or production planning, he extended the repository of modelling and solution approaches by combining logic programming with optimization, by introducing notions of artificial life and emergence, and by applying evolutionary, agent-based and lately constraint-based models of computation. He always presented his new ideas first to the CIRP community and contributed regularly to publications even in times when he was already unable to join CIRP meetings personally.

He earned scientific reputation for his pioneering works both in Hungary and abroad: he received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (1986), got his Dr. Habil degree at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (1996) and became Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2001).
