STC S - Annual Report 2016

The Scientific Technical Committee Surfaces (STC S) had two meetings in 2016 - in Paris, France, on February 18 and in Guimaraes, Portugal, on August 25. The STC S meetings were attended by 121 participants in Paris and 65 participants in Guimaraes.

During the STC S meetings future keynote papers and cooperative work were discussed. In particular G. Tossello presented the results on a round robin related to optical measurement of polymer surfaces.

At the February 18 meeting, 6 short technical presentations were given followed by a lively discussion:
1. “Understanding Surface Texturing: Challenges and possibilities” (Bapat, Malshe)
2. “ Adjusting pseudoelasticity of NiTi shape memory foams by tailoring porosity”, (Michailidis, Tsouknidas, Maliaris, Baxevanis)
3. “Dimensional metrology of individual surface features”, (Senin, Leach)
4 “Laser surface nanotexturing for bio-compatible applications”, (Orazi,Gnilitsky)
5 “Influence of cryogenic machining on the fretting corrosion behaviour of additive manufactured TI6AL4V for biomedical applications”, (Bruschi, Ghiotti, Bertolini, Bordin)
6 “Micro- and Nanoscale Surface Measurement Using an Evolutionary WSI”, (Jiang)
7 “Quantification of the temperature-dependent fatigue strength of diamond coating-substrate interface via the shear failure stress”, (Skordakis, Bouzakis)

Next to this, Prof C. Brown moderated the continuation of a challenging discussion by a presentation on the topic initiated in 2015: Surface Metrology Scientific or Experiential Discipline? C. Brown proposed the following points for discussion of how surface metrology have some basic principles that might be the basis for making it a scientific, rather than an experiential discipline. First – how surface metrology provides value: 1) Discriminate good and bad surfaces (standards, calibrations, repeatability and reproducibility) 2) Correlate roughness and performance (support production engineering), and 3) Correlate roughness and processing (support manufacturing engineering). He then proposed that discrimination and correlations require three things: 1) Characterizations of the appropriate geometrical aspects of the surface (e.g., slope, area, curvature), 2) Characterizations at the appropriate scale, and 3) Topographic measurements containing the appropriate scales with sufficient fidelity

At the August 25 meeting
, 6 short technical presentations were given followed by a lively discussion:
1. “Direct patterning of pre-excited nanoparticles by nanosecond pulsed laser” (Ahn, Choi, Yoon, Lee, Lee)
2. “Surface Integrity in Fiber Laser Cutting of Shape Memory Alloy” (Guo, Fu)
3. “Designed 3D roughness standards in the nanometre range produced by FIB” (Dziomba, Felgner, Hemmleb, Neuschaefer-Rube, Koenders, Bosse)
4. “Injection molding of micro pillars on vertical side walls using polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK)” (Y. Zhang, H.N. Hansen, S. Sørensen)
5. “Trials and tribulations when measuring additive surfaces” (Leach, Senin, Thompson)
6. “An approach for a physics-based description of the residual stress generation in manufacturing processes with a predominant thermal loading.” (Sölter, Kuschel, Frerichs, Heinzel)

Details of the technical presentations and discussions at the 2016 STC S meetings can be found in the complete minutes of these meetings, prepared by Professor B. Mullany, technical secretary of STC S. The minutes including annexes are available to CIRP members at the CIRP website.

The 2016 keynote paper of STC S entitled “Surface modification by machine hammer peening and burnishing” was presented by prof. V. Schulze preceding the S-paper session of the General Assembly in Guimaraes at August 22. Prof. Schulze coordinated this paper with F. Bleicher, P. Groche, Y.B Guo and Y.S. Pyun. This keynote paper was well received by the assembly and the STC S.

The paper session of STC S took place during the CIRP general Assembly part 1, at August 22 and 23. A total of 9 high quality papers were presented and good discussions followed all papers.

At the end of the Guimaraes meeting, the officers were changed as following: Dr. Haitjema resigned after his 3-year term of chairmanship, Prof. Enrico Savio was elected as chair, Prof. Brigid Mullany as new Vice Chair, and Prof. R.K. Leach as new Secretary. Prof. D. Lucca thanked H. Haitjema for this excellent service to STC S.
